Zesco United’s Congolese striker Idris Mbombo received a round of applause from the Kabwe Warriors supporters just before kickoff in a league match on Saturday 7 May 2016, which ended 1-1.
Mbombo approached the Warriors supporters seated at the main grandstand but the striker was somehow forced to acknowledge the entire stadium’s round of applause as he gestured to all corners of the famous Godfrey Chitalu Stadium.
This was a clear indication that Mbombo has won many hearts at Kabwe Warriors despite him only staying at the club for a season.
It was a game that many Kabwe Warriors fans expected to be full of emotional attachment to other two former warriors employees. Zesco’s midfield kingpin Misheck Chaila and coach George Lwandamina have all worked at Kabwe Warriors.
But it was Mbombo who received the roar of approval from the fully packed stadium. Mbombo was crucial to Kabwe Warriors in their quest for promotion to the Super Division scoring more than 22 goals in the process.
The striker moved to Zesco United on a season loan with the Ndola giants hoping to make the deal permanent as the player has helped Team Ya Ziko qualify to the group stage of the CAF Champions League scoring 5 goals in the process.
It is without doubt that wherever Mbombo will play out his football career, he will remain a cult hero at Kabwe Warriors.
