Tanzania beat Burundi 3-0 on penalties at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam on Sunday to book their place in the second round of 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying.
Following a 1-1 draw in the first-leg in Bujumbura earlier this week, the two nations couldn’t be separated once more as they were locked at 1-1 (2-2 on aggregate) following extra-time in Dar es Salaam.
Tanzania opened the scoring through captain Mbwana Samatta in the 29th minute. The Belgium-based forward was well positioned at the far post to bundle the ball home after Burundi failed to cleared their lines from a corner-kick.
The Swallows, though, levelled matters on the cusp of half-time against the run of play. Fiston Abdul Razak, who has a prolific record a national level, providing the finishing touches to a well worked move down the right flank.
Neither team could add to their tally in the second half, nor in 30 minutes of additional time as the game duly drifted into a penalty shoot-out.
Juma Kaseja saved Burundi’s first spot-kick before the duo of former Premier League players Saido Berahino and Gaël Bigirimana missed the target from 12 yards. Tanzania were faultless from the spot, as they duly booked their place in the next round of qualifying.
