South Africa Bafana Bafana ended AFCON 2017 campaign in bad note finishing third in Group M standings after visiting Mauritania suprised them with 1-1 draw.
Mauritania had opened the score through Guidileye Diallo in 15th minute of the first half before Mpho Makola salvaged his South Africa nation’s pride by striking back nine minutes later.
Despite missing key players in their squad and being one man down, Mauritania pinned South Africa to their own half for the better part of the game.
It was the visitors who had the first real chance in the fifth minute, when Ismael Diakiye was well picked by Baubakor but his shot went straight to Bafana Bafana goalie , who punched it out before Orando Pirates’ Makola cleared the danger.
South Africa ’s first threat came in the 24th minute when they were rewarded a penalty with Mpho Makola swung in a menacing shot to the hands of Les Mourabitones goalkeeper Brahim Souleymane.
In second half Bafana were pressing Les Mourabitones as they looked to take the lead for the first time on the night.
In the late stages of second half, Makola played a good free-kick into the Mauritania box and Boubacar, who had replaced injured Souleymane at half-time, made an easy save.
Mauritania were reduced to 10 men with 12 minutes left on clock after Ismael Diakite received a red card.
All in all, Mauritania managed to contain South Africa in the last minutes of the game and the two teams drew 1-1.
