The Midfield Boss Victor Wanyama has spoken and he did it will precision and total authority as Southampton crushed hapless Arsenal 4-0 in a perfomance reserved for special Christmas gift.
It was a day full of mixed reactions as pressure was mounting for Southampton Boss Ronald Koeman after five winless games left them just four points above relegation zone but alas Boxing day was different as superb Wanyama huffed and puffed the entire midfield breath marshalling brilliantly in the middle of the park as he made a match-high six tackles and 10 interceptions, often bullying the opposition players.
Speaking exclusively to soka25east.com Wanyama was full of praise for his team mates “it was a great perfomance from the entire team we gave the manager and our special fans something to smile about but we have to quickly forget the win and regroup for the next match.I am personally happy things went as planned and giving Southampton 100 percent is the best feeling and present this Christmas”Wanyama told soka25east.com
Wanyama’s great perfomance came just a few weeks after Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said he liked the player but he did not have him in his plans after legend Robert Pires urged the Frenchman to sign the top Kenyan midfielder. It was indeed a perfomance befitting an answer to Arsenal and Arsene Wenger as Wanyama once again proved his mind was settled not on transfer speculations but on giving his best for Southampton.
The opening goal was stunning. There seemed to be no danger when defender Per Mertesacker headed the ball away, and Martina steadied himself before unleashing an outside-of-the-foot drive which started wide of the post before swerving into the net.
Arsenal posed little threat and the hosts added to their tally with a slick counter-attacking move.
There was a hint of controversy in it though, as Long and Laurent Koscielny came together in the build-up, leaving the Frenchman on the ground, allowing Long to stride forward unchallenged and stroke in from Sadio Mane’s pass.
Defender Fonte added a bullet header and Long grabbed his second to complete a comprehensive victory for Southampton who managed their first clean sheet in six games.
