OPINION: Why Gor Mahia FC needs more than 43 Goals to Win KPL 2016.

By John Odande,

No sane football fan in Kenya doubts that Gor Mahia FC was the most dominant team in the country during the 2015 season.

The team had the perfect balance between a prolific strike force and a resolute defense that refused the attempts by several teams to breach it.

In the entire season, the strike force scored 60 goals while the defense only conceded 12. So, why does K’Ogalo need more than 43 goals to win the title this year?

Well, that is because three players scored 43 goals for the club last season. Michael Olunga, Meddie Kagere and Ali Abondo scored 19, 13 and 11 goals respectively for the club.

The three players were responsible for over 70% of all the goals that the defending champions scored on their way to winning the title for the third time in a row.

Olunga – Kagere - Abondo

Unfortunately, K’Ogalo has lost the three players. The club has lost 70% of the goals it scored last year. Olunga is in Sweden undergoing trials with Djurgarden IF.

Kagere’s exact location remains unknown after his negotiations with the club hit a snag. Abondo is reportedly in South Africa training with Ajax Cape Town.

In 2013/14 season, Liverpool FC came close to winning the English Premier League title.

This was possible because of the efforts of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge in scoring goals for fun.

During that season, the two helped the club score more than 100 goals in the league alone.

When Suarez left for Barcelona and Sturridge suffered unending injuries, Liverpool has struggled.

Consequently, K’Ogalo has a tough task making sure that it does not turn into another Liverpool by experiencing huge difficulties scoring goals.

In Jacob Keli, Jack ‘JaUsenge’ Tuyisenge, George ‘Blackberry’ Odhiambo, Enock Agwanda and Francis Kahata, Gor Mahia should have enough firepower to score more than the 60 goals the club managed last season.

Last week, Keli’s goal against Bandari should have stood. The referee and his assistant cancelled it on the basis that Keli scored from an offside position. During that match, Keli showed great understanding with Agwanda.

Although it will be awhile before we see Tuyisenge and Kahata in CAF Champions League, let’s hope their first KPL match will be full of goals for K’Ógalo.

Let’s hope that the new players can form great partnerships and score over 43 goals in 2016.
