MY VIEW IN THE CHARITY SHIELD FINAL
GREEN BUFFALOES VS POWER DYNAMOS
NKOLOMA STADIUM
15:00HRS
Wednesday 9th March 2016
This will be the 50th final of the Charity Shield in Zambia the competition which is an opener of the Zambia Soccer season. This tournament was officially named Samuel “Zoom” Ndhlovu Memorial Cup since 2003. The past 49 titles are divided into the following:
15 Nkana, 7 Kabwe Warriors, 5 Green Buffaloes and Power Dynamos, 4 Mufulira Wanderers, 3 Nchanga Rangers, Zanaco and Zesco, 2 Red Arrows, 1 Ndola United and Vitafoam United.
WHO GETS THE TITLE ON NUMBER
Green Buffaloes and Power Dynamos have won the title five times each
Green Buffaloes: 1974, 1978, 1980, 2008 and 2010.
Power Dynamos: 1998, 2004, 2009, 2012 and 2013
The last final of Green Buffaloes was in 2010 when the beat Zesco United 1-0 after Extra time while that of Power Dynamos remains the 2013 Final when they beat ZANACO 2-1.
This will be an interesting final with the two teams that have not met in the final at this stage GBFC getting the spot after beating ZANACO in the Semi-finals last month while Power Dynamos beat Zesco in post-match penalty shoot-out after Conlyde Luchanga cancelled the 1-0 score line that Zesco had led for almost 60 minutes of the game played.
Power Dynamos don’t have Conlyde Luchanga anymore as he has moved back to his team Lusaka Dynamos and how he would have loved to play in this final that he managed to lead Power Dynamos into.
From 2000 there has only been one final decided through penalty Shoot outs and that was in 2007 when Zesco played to a 1-1 draw with Kabwe Warriors which Zesco ended up to win 5-3.
Interestingly Green Buffaloes have played two finals forcing them to go to extra time in 2008 against Kabwe Warriors which they ended up winning 2-1 and in 2010 which they beat Zesco 1-0.
That tells you how difficult Green Buffaloes is when playing a final and Power Dynamos would have to be aware of that that statistics. It’s difficult to beat GBFC in a finals
But Power Dynamos have proven to be good scorers when called to play the final of the Charity Shield. They beat Nchanga Rangers 3-1 in 2012 and went on to defend the Charity Shield in 2013 beating ZANACO.
Good game awaiting fans on Wednesday and the best prepared team will carry the day. I for one think Conlyde Luchanga will be missed by Power Dynamos but I think they have enough cover and they will want to prove that even when they miss Luchanga, they can still be a threat for the 2016 season.
I will go for GBFC on this one even with their blunt striking force but they know how to marshal the midfield and defence of Adrian Chama, Buchizya Mfune, Malan Gondwe and Stephen Kabamba. This is not an easy defence for Julio Situmbeko whose pace is good but this one will be tough.
MY VERDICT: GREEN BUFFALOES 1-0 POWER DYNAMOS.
