By Francis Ngira,
I only have Belgium left in the 2014 FIFA worldcup of all the three teams I swore allegiance to when the finals started.
I wont name the other two so as not to add salt to an already open ulcer owing to the painful manner in which they all exited the competition, the only hint is, they were all African teams. I however have a new team to passionately direct my allegiance to atleast for today as I am still Origi’s number one fan.
Straight to the point, my newly adopted team, Colombia is today going to beat ‘Samba Boys’ as a special honour for the late ANDRES ESCOBAR of the 1994World in U.S.A
The ‘Los Cafeteros ‘ as they are fondly reffered to last beat Brazil by a 2-0 margin in the group stages of the 1991 Copa America;
That was the late Andres Escobar’s era, when talents such as goalkeeper Renee Higuita of the famous scorpion kick save at Wembley Stadium on 6 September 1995 that blocked a shot by Jamie Redknapp fearlessly thrived.
With their president Juan Manuel Santos having flown in for their first worldcup quater final duel in the colombian soccer history, a fully sold out stadium, a huge following of 40 plus million people at home and lastly and most importantly the late Escobar’s family in the stadium donning the departed defenders retired jersey number 2, the Colombians have all the motivation they require to make their history more richer by cruising into the semi-finals.
Andres Escobar was gunned down by unknown assailants upon his return from the 1994 worldcup in U.S.A for his own goal that saw them crush out of the tournament in group stages.
