South African giants Sundowns suffered a 1-0 defeat to DRC side AS Vita in the Caf Champions League second-round first-leg clash played at the Stade Tata Raphaël on Sunday
Mamelodi Sundowns were targeting a crucial away victory when they locked horns with Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) side AS Vita in Kinshasa.
Keagan Dolly spotted Vita goalkeeper Landu Makiese off his line, but his attempt sailed well wide of the target just seven minutes into the game.
The Brazilians were looking more threatening each time they pushed forward in search of the opening goal.
In the 17th minute, Sundowns midfielder Mzikayise Mashaba played a good through pass for Leonardo Castro, but Makiese came out to make a decent save.
Vita striker Mbala Ndombe was played in on the left, but his shot went wide of the target as the home side looked to break the deadlock a minute after the half-hour mark.
Ghanaian forward Bernard Morrison was sent through on goal for Vita, but he missed the upright by inches on the stroke of half-time.
Sundowns keeper Denis Onyango rushed off his line to deny Morrison from close range just eight minutes after the restart.
On the hour-mark, the visitors made a change introducing Cuthbert Malajila for another striker Castro.
The Brazilians were frustrating the Black Dolphins who were finding it difficult to create clear cut chances at this stage.
Dolly found some space inside the Vita box in the 66th minute, but the Sundowns winger placed his shot over Makiese’s goal.
With 15 minutes left on the clock, Sundowns shot-stopper Onyango was booked by Somalian match referee Hagi Wiish for time wasting.
The Uganda international Onyango denied Vita a late goal when he saved Guy Lusadisu’s free-kick in the 87th minute.
However, Héritier Luvumbu snatched a late winner for Vita with a tap in following a rebound from Onyango’s save.
