The Kenya Women team today made history by qualifying for the biennial African Women Nations Cup formerly African Nations Women Championships for the first time.
The team led by Youth Coach David Ouma and assistant Mary Adhiambo today edged out power house Algeria with a Cherish Aila goal.
Kenya becomes the fourth East African country to make it to the tournament since it’s inception in 1991.the tournament also acts as the World cup qualifier Avenue with Nigeria boasting of nine titles out of eleven.
Kenya joins hosts Cameroon, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Zimbabwe in the eight nation tournament that will have two groups.
The tournament will be held in the cities of Yaounde and Limbe between 19th November and 3rd December 2016.
The only East Africa and CECAFA country that has made progress of the tournament is Ethiopia who finished fourth in 2004 and also qualified in the 2002 and 2012 editions.
Uganda qualified for the 2000 edition but failed to make it past the group stage while Tanzania too failed to make it past the group stage in 2010.
Since the new office at the Football Kenya Federation took over, preparations for the team has been in top gear with the FKF President Nick Mwendwa himself visiting the Starlets at their camp several times and making sure that the logistics are in place.
This were the women who did Kenya proud in both the first and return legs.
Kenya held Algeria 2-2 away and drew 1-1 at home for a 3-3 scoreline. They proceed on away goal rule.
