SportPesa Kenyan Premier league week 13 was a weekend to behold as teams fought tooth and nail as the league nears the half way break.
In identical 1-0 victories on Saturday, Muhoroni Youth silenced AFC Leopards in Kisumu, Sony Sugar continued to improve prevailing over Thika United, Posta Rangers were brought down to earth by visiting Chemelil Sugar, and Tusker subdued battling Sofapaka.
Ulinzi Stars were the biggest winners Sunday as they punished poor Nairobi City Stars, defending champs Gor snatched victory against Stima at the death, Mathare underlined their title credentials in Mombasa and Ushuru stunned home side Kakamega Homeboyz.
Muhoroni Youth 1-0 AFC Leopards (Moi Stadium)
Muhoroni substitute Benjamin Mosha condemned Ingwe to their fourth loss of the season and fifth game in a row without a win.
Mosha turned neatly inside the box to rifle his shot into the net with just a minute of normal time remaining as Muhoroni bounced back to winning following their loss to Gor Mahia a week back.
Muhoroni’s lead striker and top league scorer Wycliffe Ochomo was a handful for the Leopards defence to deal but this was not his day.
Posta Rangers 0-1 Chemelil Sugar (Nyayo Stadium)
This was the first defeat impressive Rangers have suffered in eight matches and their second of the season.
Chemelil’s David Ojuang accounted for the match’s most important item in the ninth minute guiding home Samuel Ouma’s corner.
Sony Sugar 1-0 Thika United (Awendo Green Stadium)
Amos Asembeka came through with his first goal of the season as Sony notched up their fourth win in five games and signal a possible revival.
Asembeka made the most of a deflected shot from Boniface Muchiri to shake the net and halt the resurgence of Thika under James Nandwa.
Tusker 1-0 Sofapaka (Kenyatta Stadium)
Ten-time champions Tusker lived up to expectations to extend their stay at the summit of the SportPesa Premier League table with this slim victory.
Former KPL Player of the Year Ekaliana Ndolo came through with Tusker’s goal after 69 minutes in a swift and sweet one-touch football move – a cut in from former AFC Leopards striker Michael Khamati, who had gotten on the end of a long punt from deep to set up an emphatic finish.
This result left Batoto ba Mungu rooted at the bottom of the table as the brewers strengthened their lead at the top on 27 points.
Western Stima 0-1 Gor Mahia (Moi Stadium)
Ddefending champions Gor Mahia took full advantage of five minutes of added time to finally breakdown their stubborn hosts.
International Francis Kahata thumped in a header, his first strike of the season, in the final minute of added time to extend K’Ogalo’s winning run to four games and move them to third in the league table.
Bandari 0-1 Mathare United (Mbaraki Sports Club)
Mathare United will surely have underlined their title credentials after coming out with all three points from the difficult hunting ground of Mombasa.
Defender Robinson Kamura beat experienced goalkeeper Wilson Oburu in the 73rd minute to leave the home fans dismayed and Bandari coach Twahir Muhideen bemused as he recorded his eighth straight match without a win. This was a deserved result for the visitors who had threatened all afternoon.
Ushuru 1-0 Kakamega Homeboyz (Nyayo Stadium)
It was the same story, different day for Kakamega Homeboyz who were the better team but still fell to the opposition.
Kennedy Oduor’s strike for the taxmen proved the difference at the end of the match as Homeboyz went down to their third 1-0 loss in a row.
Ulinzi Stars 3-0 City Stars (Afraha Stadium)
A comprehensive win for the Kenya Defence Forces side though they had to wait until the second half to do the damage.
Enos Ochieng opened the flood gates in the 55th minute when he connected home Kevin Amwayi’s cross.
Amwayi become the provider in the second goal scored on 61 minutes when he crossed low for Kenya international John Nairuka to double the soldiers’ lead.
Ulinzi’s lead striker John Makwatta sold a cheeky dummy to his marker before beating City Stars custodian Ronnie Kagunzi at the far post to complete the rout and raise his season tally to five goals.
