Premier Soccer League (PSL) 2016 Awards gala went down on Monday night at Emperor’s Palace in Kempton Park, South Africa.
The colourful event where the best performers in the just concluded 2015/16 season were fated was especially a one of a kind for Champions Mamelodi Sundowns.
Of the eighteen gongs up for grabs across all categories, the “Brazilians” took home seven including the best goalkeeper award which went to Dannis Onyango.
The accolade was a culmination of over a decade of hard work, resilience and determination for the towering Ugandan in the highly rated league.
Onyango kept fourteen clean sheets on their way to the seventh league title which they won with a new record of seventy one points – he floored close rivals; Moeneeb Josephs (Bidvest Wits) and Shu-Aib Walters (Mpumalanga Black Aces) to the coveted crown.
It was the first time the 31 years old former SC Villa, Supersport United and Black Aces shot stopper was getting the nod for the award.
The show stopper of the night was without iota of doubt Onyango’s teammate, Zimbabwe international Khama Billiat who scooped three awards including overall best player of the season – the highly rated attacking midfielder also walked away with Player’s Player of the year and best midfielder award.
Sundowns Coach Pitso Masimone grabbed the Coach of the season award, having won the league and secured a spot in the CAF Champions League last eight.
