Mamelodi Sundowns will be out to add to Enyimba’s woes when they welcome the Nigerian giants to the Lucas Moripe Stadium, in what is expected to be a thrilling 2016 Caf Champions League clash on Wednesday evening.
Kick-off is at 7:00pm CAT.
Having suffered defeat at home to Zamalek in their opening Group B tussle, Enyimba know the importance of the midweek clash.
For Sundowns the game is of equal importance as they were stripped of the three points they accumulated on Algerian soil earlier this month. Goals from Tiyani Mabunda and Khama Billiat inspired the South African’s to a 2-0 victory over ES Setif.
But, the two-time former champions have since been disqualified from the competition; after the game against Sundowns was cut short due to crowd trouble.
Sundowns star winger Keagan Dolly has expressed that the club are disappointed that the win in Setif was chalked off, but believes the clubs passage to the semifinals has been made easier; barring they win their home fixtures.
“We are a bit disappointed that they deducted our points…we fought really hard in Algeria, we played well, we were defensively disciplined, we created chances and we scored the two goals,” Dolly said at Chloorkop on Monday.
“Our next focus is the game against Enyimba. We are playing at home, in front of our supporters…we have to stick to what we are good at and just go for all three points.
“I think it is much easier for us to qualify now that there are three teams…we just have to make sure we win our games, but we shouldn’t take it for granted. We are all in the same situation although Zamalek won their opening game.
The South Africa under-23 national captain expects Enyimba to come out guns blazing, but is confident of the Absa Premiership champions chances on home soil.
“For us it’s just to beat Enyimba at home now and try and get points as well,” Dolly continued.
“Considering that they lost their first game against Zamalek…it will be difficult but we want to win against them, I think that will put us in a good position. Obviously when we go away to Zamalek we want a point or three. We will stick to what we are good at and focus on ourselves.”
Going down 1-0 to Zamalek in Port Harcourt was the worst result possible for Enyimba, but the midweek clash presents the club with a shot at redemption.
Peoples’ Elephant forward Onyekachi Peter has reiterated the club’s desire to add a third continental crown to their trophy cabinet. The Aba giants won back-to-back Caf Champions League titles just over a decade ago.
“It will not be easy at Mamelodi Sundowns, who are already bruised with the victory cancellation and will want to prove to their teeming supporters that the win at ES Setif was not a fluke but well deserved,” said Peter.
“However, we have been on this path in the past and know what it takes to survive such a high tempo game.
“We have worked on the mistakes that hampered our game against Zamalek to ensure we claim a favourable result at Sundowns.
“We will not disappoint Nigerians but claim a win to convince them of our readiness to reclaim the African title we won back to back in 2003 and 2004.”
Sundowns faced Nigerian side Julius Berger in the group stages of the 2001 Caf Champions League. Having suffered a 2-0 defeat away from home, the Tshwane outfit won 1-0 on home soil on their way to reaching the final.
