Rayon Sports are the 2016 Rwanda’s Peace Cup Champions for the ninth time.

A late strike from Malian Ismaila Diarra who is soon linking up AFC Leopards in the Kenyan Premier League, sealed the sweet victory over arch rivals APR FC before a fully packed Amahoro Stadium on Monday evening.

Earlier in the third place play off at the same venue, AS Kigali edged Espoir FC by a similar margin thanks to another late goal from Ernest Sugira header.

The final was a highly tense affair with both sets of fans apprehensive and expectant in almost equal measure. And after 90′ of intense end to end action and no goals, with everything pointing to a penalty shoot out, Diarra rose to occasion, changing the scoreline two minutes past the regulation time with a brilliant finish to send Amahoro to ecstasy denying APR 13th title.

For their exploits, Rayon who have undergone difficult financial times this season walked away with 8M Rwandan Francs, APR took home a half of the amount while AS Kigali pocketed 1.5M.

The club will represent Rwanda in the CAF Confederations Cup next season.
