KPL WEEK 28 WRAP

KPL WEEK 28 WRAP

By Samuel Gacharira,

Inconsistency clouded much of this weekend’s action especially among the relegation threatened sides and some did not escape unscathed.

The axe finally claimed a victim in the name of Nakuru All Stars as the curtains of the antepenultimate stage of the league were closed. A new turn of events transpired at the opposite end of the table with Sofapaka cutting Gor Mahia’s lead to only one point.

FRIDAY 24TH OCTOBER

Ushuru 0-2 Tusker (Moi International Sports Centre)

Not even Football Kenya Federation (FKF’s) decision to rescind KPL’s decision to award them three points against Muhoroni Youth in their abandoned tie last weekend; could fault Tusker’s ambition and determination on the field of play.

Second half goals from Jesse Were eight minutes from the break and a screamer from Khalid Aucho in the 72nd minute were enough to condemn a disjointed Ushuru to their eighth loss in a row.

Tusker are now ranked 3rd with 51 points three shy of the league leaders while Ken Kenyatta’s side are 12th with 33 points.

Nairobi City Stars 1-2 Muhoroni Youth (Moi International Sports Centre)

Abbas Akinyemi converted from the spot at the stroke of half time to hand the visitors the breakthrough before Dennis Okoth equalized in similar fashion in the 76th minute. However, with ten minutes to go Ezekiel Otuoma showed his class with a brilliant solo effort whose end result was the winner and three crucial points.

The result now leaves Muhoroni Youth at 9th place with 37 points level on points with both Thika United and Sony Sugar but with an inferior goal difference.Nairobi City Stars continue grappling with relegation at 15th place with 20 points.

SATURDAY 25TH OCTOBER

Thika United 0-1 Ulinzi Stars (Thika Municipal Stadium)

John Nairuka returned to Thika in auspicious fashion tasting victory against his former teammates. This was the fourth consecutive win for the soldiers who are enjoying a rich vein of form. Kevin Amwayi netted the lone goal seven minutes to time with a curling strike past Hamza Muwonge in goal.

Ulinzi remain at 4th place with 47 points while Thika United drop two places to position 8 with 37 points.

Western Stima 2-0 Nakuru All Stars (Kisumu Stadium)

Nakuru All Stars will certainly play in the second tier next season after suffering their seventeenth loss of the season this weekend. Two first half goals from Ali Bhai and John Kiplagat did the job for the hosts.

Henry Omino’s charges now lie at position 10 with 36 points while the Nakuru based side occupy bottom place with a paltry 17 points.

SUNDAY 26TH OCTOBER

Bandari 1-1 KCB (Mombasa Municipal Stadium)

John Macharia’s had only lasted 20 minutes on the pitch after coming in two minutes from the break when he notched the equalizer for the bankers via a penalty kick .Bandari took the lead courtesy of Bruno Sserunkuma’s effort in the 24th minute but could not hold on to their lead in the second half. Humphrey Okoti was then sent off for dissent at the tail end of the match.

Bandari are still at 13th place with 29 points while KCB are ne position behind them with 24 points.

Chemelil Sugar 0-1 AFC Leopards (Kisumu Stadium)

Jacob Keli came off the bench to set up fellow substitute Michael Khamati for the winner against their nemesis. It was an even affair that saw Ingwe struggle to settle into the match in the absence of their vocal fans who are banned for the remainder of the season.

Despite the loss, the millers remain at 5th position with 44 points while Ingwe are six points behind them at 6th position.

Mathare United 1-1 Sony Sugar (Kenyatta Stadium)

Nine was fine for goal scorer Edwin Ombasa but the joy did not last long for the hosts as the visitors got their much deserved equalizer four minutes later through Marwa Chamberi. He sent the Peter Odhiambo the wrong way from the spot after Robinson Kamura’s handball in the danger area.

Stanley Okumbi will have to put up with 11th position with 34 points while his opposite number Zedekiah “Zico” Otieno marvels at the 7th placing with 37 points.

Sofapaka 3-2 Gor Mahia (Kenyatta Stadium)

This tie lived up to the billing despite the ugly scenes of hooliganism witnessed later on. Fiston Abdulrazak proved his worth notching a brace for Batoto ba Mungu before Ekaliani Ndolo wrapped the win with a calm finish. Geoffrey Kizito’s goal for the league leaders later only made the score line look respectable as the damage had already been done.

Gor Mahia still top the standings with 54 points but Sofapaka are now a close second only one point behind them.
