CAF’s Congress sitting in Cairo, Egypt on Thursday shot down a proposal to scrap prohibitive clause 18 of its statutes on eligibility to contest for the presidency.

The motion fronted by Djibouti Football Federation gunered 16 votes against 32 hence falling short of 75% threshold for approval. Five countries including South Africa, Kenya, Ethiopia and Malawi abstained.

The voting was by show of hands despite protest from Liberia FA boss Musa Bility who was in favor of secret ballot method.

The rule allows only the 12 CAF Executive Committee members to challenge for the top job which has been under tight control of Cameroonian Issa Hayatou for over two decades now.

Hayatou is believed to be angling for another term come next year’s elections and today’s vote smoothens his path.

Below is how East Africa voted:

Ethiopia and Kenya ABSTAINED.
Eritrea and Burundi voted NO.
Rwanda,South Sudan, Djibout, Somalia Uganda, Sudan and Tanzania voted YES.
