Stars’ of East Africans plying their trade abroad shone brighter over the weekend with nominations for Africa’s biggest football awards, Glo CAF Awards.

Four of them, Bwana Samatta (Tanzania), Denis Onyango (Uganda), Victor Wanyama and Jesse Were (Kenya), were nominated for the prestigious awards, on Saturday, October 15.

Samatta, Onyango and Wanyama got the nod for African player of the year accolade, with Jesse to contest the African player of the year based in Africa title, currently held by the “Taifa Stars” skipper, Samatta.

On the same day, Mamelodi Sundowns’ keeper Onyango, a nominee for both awards, guided his side to an emphatic 3-0 win over Egyptian giants Zamalek in African champions league final first leg at Lucas Moripe stadium, South Africa.

The second leg happens in a week’s time in Alexandria, Egypt at Borg El Arab stadium, with the aggregate winner being crowned champions.

Kenya’s “Harambee Stars” captain Wanyama, roamed the midfield for Tottenham Hotspur in the premier league as they rallied to pick a point from West Brom away.

Jesse missed a penalty, but another Kenyan David Owino scored, to hand Zesco a 1-0 passage to Barclays Cup final over Power Dynamos at Arthur Davies stadium.

Samatta assisted the second goal to help salvage a point for KRC Genk, in a 2-2 away draw to Moesroen in Belgium topflight league on Sunday, October 16.

Kenyan winger Ayub Timbe opened scoring for Lierse SK in a 2-1 win against Union SG in Belgium second division league fixture at Herman Vanderpoorten on Sunday, October 16.

The win propelled them to the top of the league with 21 points from 11 rounds of matches.

Ugandan Khalid Aucho, started his life with Baroka FC in premier soccer league of South Africa with a 2-1 win over Cape Town City at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday, October 15.

The former Gor Mahia midfield stalwart replaced Chauke Mfundhisii in the 50th minute. His country mate, and Uganda Cranes captain Godfrey Massa did not make match day squad.
