All roads lead to Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday for the biggest club game in Kenyan football as AFC Leopards host champions Gor Mahia in the 83rd Mashemeji Derby.
Both sides have won the league diadem 28 times with Gor winning 15 times while Leopards have won it 13 times.
Leopards have been underwhelming this season but they boast of the bragging rights for this fixture having beaten Gor Mahia 1-0 the first leg.
While Ingwe have no hope of winning any title this season, a win on Sunday will be highly satisfactory for the club as it will see them complete a double against their archrivals as well as derailing K’Ogalo’s quest to retain the league crown for a fourth straight time.
Gor on the other hand, must win as they desperately try to close down table leaders Tusker.
This is expected to be Ezekiel Akwana’s last match in charge of the big cats before he relinquishes the coaching duties to Englishman John Stewart Hall who has been handed a two-year contract at the Den.
Gor come into this match on the back of a 1-0 loss to Muhoroni Youth last Sunday followed by an uninspiring 2-2 draw with Western Stima on Wednesday.
Ingwe’s Allan Katerrega is suspended for the encounter after being sent off for stamping.
In his absence, the task of scoring goals will fall on Kepha Aswani.
Despite boasting of a top quality squad, Gor has struggled in the last two months going for failing to find the back of the net.
They have a lively frontline led by Rwanda duo of Meddie Kagere and Jacque Tuyisenge along with George Odhiambo, Enock Agwanda,Jacob Kelli and Innocent Wafula.
With both declaring their teams ready for the battle with a few jibes aimed at each other, the officials presented a perfect picture of the brotherhood they want in the match.
“Its an important match for us and I have told my players to give 100 percent being a big match.I am optimistic of a good game and hope to get those elusive goals “Gor Mahia’s coach Ze Maria told soka25east.com
Whereas his AFC Leopards coach Ezekiel Akwana incharge of his last game was buoyant “Being a derby anything is possible and I want to end my tenure on a positive note by getting a win against giants Gor Mahia “Akwana told Soka25east.com
Leopards’ organizing secretary Timothy Lilumbi has assured fans of their safety during the match as he called on them too to play their part in ensuring a peaceful derby.
“All will be fine; we have put in place good security measures and the safety of everyone remains top priority. This is a brotherly game and that is what we want reflected. Fans should also play their part and all will go well,” he stated.
A total of 200 police officers as well as 100 private security officers will be deployed for the match schedule to start at 3pm EAT.
