FIFA President Gianni Infantino has expressed his deepest condolences after 11 fans were killed by unknown gunman in South Sudan in an attack that also injured sixteen other individuals.
A gunman opened fire on a crowd watching an English Premier League game between Chelsea and Everton in an incident that took place in Gure, a suburb in Juba,the South Sudan capital.
The victims died on the spot and the Fifa president, like many others, has expressed his sorrow at what is a truly tragic event.
“I was very shocked and saddened to learn of the terrible attacks on people watching a football match between Chelsea and Everton in a bar in Juba on Saturday,” Infantino wrote, in an open letter to the nation’s Football Association president Chabur Goc Alei.
“On behalf of Fifa and myself ,we send our sincere condolences to your association and football community in South Sudan.Our thoughts are with the family of those who have died as well as the injured victims of senseless acts and the international football family extends its greatest sympathy to them at this painfull moment.”
“Today the South Sudan flag in our headquarters in Zurich will be flown half mast as an expression of our solidarity and as a mark of respect to South Sudan people at this difficult time”.
The city was hit by violence earlier this year as rival political factions clashed affecting football activities in the country.
