As Egypt makes a comeback to Africa’s most prestigious competition AFCON, after missing out on the last three editions all eyes will be on former Argentine international Centre back Hector Cuper to guide them to a record 8th continental crown.
The 61 year old, Chaba’s Santa Fe born tactician begun his playing career with Ferro Carril Oeste before moving to Rivadavia and hung his boots while playing for Huracan in 1992.
The Argentine made his coaching debut with Huracan before moving to Europe to coach Real Mallorca guiding them to the finals of the Copa del Rey where they lost to Barcelona and the finals of the Uefa winners cup where they lost to Lazio in his first 2 seasons with the club.
He later moved to Valencia where he steered the side to 2 consecutive Uefa champions league finals loosing to Real Madrid and Bayern Munich respectively before moving to Italy with Inter Milan where he spent 2 seasons before he was fired after 6 matches of the 2003-2004 season due to poor performance.
He has also coached Real Betis, Parma, Georgia national team, Aris Thessaloniki, Racing Santander, Orduspor with his last stint being in the UAE with league side Al Wasi.
All his experience will come into play as Egypt are in the group of death alongside Ghana, Uganda and Mali.
Egypt kick off their AFCON group D campaign against Mali on the 17th of January at the Stade de Port -Gentil.
