Six football officials from the east African region have offered their candidatures for various posts within CAF and FIFA during the forthcoming 39th CAF General Congress in March.
The full list of all candidates was approved at a CAF Executive Committee meeting in Gabon yesterday.
The meeting was attending by the CAF President Issa Hayatou who will be defending his seat for a record 8th term against his sole challenger Madagascar’s Ahmad Ahmad during the elections.
FUFA President Eng. Moses Magogo, whose star has been rising in the region, will go for a CAF Executive Commitee Member slot for the Central-East Zone.
Magogo, an electrical engineer by trade, and a former employee of the African Development Bank, will square it out against the outgoing member Magdi Shams El Din (Sudan), Juneidi Basha (Ethiopia) and Suleiman Hassan Waberi (Djibouti).
Lydia Nsekera of Burudi will face-off with Sierra Leone’s federation President (the only woman federation boss in Africa) for the single women’s post in the Exco.
Lydia has also cast her net in the race for FIFA Council Membership in the open applications category, with Almamy Kabele Camara (Guinea), Chabur Goc Alei (South Sudan), Danny Jordaan (South Africa) and Hani Abo Rida (Egypt) as the other challengers.
Reputable former Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) honcho Leodegar Tenga will go for FIFA Council membership for the Anglophone Grouping (English speakers).
The former CECAFA Secretary General will be up against Zambian legend and former Football Association of Zambia President Kalusha Bwalya and the Ghana Football Association boss Kwesi Nyantakyi.
An official cannot serve as both CAF Exco and FIFA Member. During the polls, the latter will be elected first. The elected candidates will be in office for a period of four years, from 2017 to 2021.
The 39th CAF General Assembly will take place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from March 16-17, 2017, with more than 380 delegates expected to attend.
