By Admin,
Vipers didn’t have to carry their scoring boots, after all. All they needed was the help of their opponents, KCC. Literally.
And they got it on Friday thanks to two first half own goals as Vipers beat KCC 2-0 to maintain control of proceedings at the summit.
Joseph Ochaya and goalkeeper Yasin Mugabi’s own goals saw Vipers keep top spot in the Uganda Premier League (UPL) as they moved to 56 points, two ahead of SC Villa and six in front of third-placed KCC. Both Vipers and KCC have played a game more than Villa.
In a match watched by a sizeable crowd at Lugogo, hosts KCC had the first sniff at goal through midfield player Owen Kasule just inside two minutes but the visitors’ goalkeeper was equal to the task.
But it was coach Edward Golola’s Vipers that had better shape going forward thereafter. Little wonder continued pressure forced KCC into costly errors.
Vipers attacked, Cranes midfield player Farouk Miya finding space down the left where he beat Ivan Ntege before crossing for Ochaya to turn into his own net on 28 minutes.
The visitors doubled the advantage before the break, Allan Kyambadde winning a corner on the left. Mike Mutyaba took it but goalkeeper Mugabi could only fumble into his own net.
KCC coach Abdallah Mubiru, who had earlier replaced Baker Lukooya with William Wadri, brought on Michael Birungi for Kasule and Herman Wasswa for the injured Derrick Nsibambi but Vipers held on to remain on course for their first title in five years.
