The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has written to the Kenyan Premier League asking them to release the 2017 season fixtures.
In a letter to KPL dated February 23rd, Robert Muthomi, the federation’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) asked for the much awaited fixtures to be released, since a petition by Muhoroni Youth and Sofapaka fans to stop the same unless the two clubs are included was thrown out on a technicality by a High Court in Kisumu yesterday.
Muhoroni Youth and Sofapaka were demoted to the National Super League for failing to meet the minimum club licensing threshold, a decision they challenged at the Sports Disputes Tribunal and later the High Court of Kenya.
“Following the vacating of orders by the High Court in Kisumu regarding petition No. 2 that sought to stop the start of the Kenyan Premier League 2017 season and the decision of the JEC meeting held on the 16th of February 2016, please proceed to release the league fixtures as par the Sports Disputes Tribunal ruling in cause No.1 of 2017,” the letter states in part.
“The release of fixtures will allow for the match appointments committee to sit and appoint referees to officiate the matches.
“By this letter all the clubs are advised of this development,” the letter concludes.
KPL’s Chief Executive Officer Jack Oguda however responded that he could only act after receiving a copy of the court ruling.
The Sports Disputes Tribunal had previously ruled that the league should go ahead with 16 teams before February 25th pending the fate of the two clubs plus Vihiga United and KCB, whose promotions were contested.
