Fans of the Ethiopian Premier League giants St. George joined the rest of Ethiopians in marking Adwa, the victory against colonization.

The fans marched together from Adwa Square to King Menilik Square in the capital Addis Ababa in song and dance to mark the 121st anniversary of the triumph against Italian invasion.

In 1896, Ethiopians gallantly fought against Italian invasion –defeating them in what came to be known as the Adwa victory. However, the European powerhouse would return in 1935 – managing conquer but only for five years.

During the Italian sojourn, Ethiopians continued to fight for freedom till they regained self-rule.

One of the tools used to agitate for freedom and spread unity across the country was football, and St. George FC founded by Greeks and Ethiopians then was at the center of the struggle.

Today the Horsemen, as St. George are nicknamed, are still regarded as a symbol Ethiopian nationalism and enjoy massive support across the nation.

From Soka25east.com we wish Ethiopians a Happy Adwa.
