Gor Mahia beat newly promoted side Kariobangi Sharks 3-1 at Thika Stadium on Sunday evening.
Sharks dominated the early moments with Ovella Ochieng, Osborne Monday and Ibrahim Kitawi particularly dangerous on set pieces, but their combination could not find the back of the net.
Kitawi created two open chances and would have done better with a loose ball inside Kogalo’s territory in the 10th minute with goalkeeper Bonface Oluoch well positioned to deny Sharks.
Gor came into the match later and dominated the proceedings. Geoffrey Walusimbi’s shot was then deflected out minutes later followed by Nzigiyimana misfiring after Gor had prised open Sharks defence from the middle of the pitch.
On the other end, attempts by Sharks’s Michael Bondo and Pascal Ogweno fizzled out inside Gor’s territory as both teams traded powerful shots at goal as the match wore.
It was, however, Gor who created the most realistic scoring chances but had to wait until the 31st minute when Karim Nzigiyimana cut through the flank and sent a ball into the box for Haroun Shakava to head into the net.
Gor got their second in the 39th minute when Mugiraneza tapped the ball into the net after Mboya had spilled a shot from Walusimbi from what appeared to be in an offside position.
Sharks had an open opportunity later but Michael Misingo shot wide out of target.
Gor made the third late in second half through Tuyisenge touch past Mboya who had a busy day in office.
Mathew Odongo got a consolation on the 92nd minute but that was not enough to snatch victory from an improved Gor side.
