Gor Mahia weathered heavy storm to maintain their unbeaten run with a deserved 2-0 win over struggling Thika United in a late Kenya Premier League kick off tie staged at the Safaricom Kasarani Stadium.
After much prodding, Gor Mahia took the lead after 32 minutes through towering defender Haroun Shakava who headed brilliantly a cross from Karim Nizigiyimana past Thika Keeper Levis Opiyo.
From then onwards, it was Gor who continued to call the shots with missed chances being the order of the evening.
Gor who led 1-0 before the breather came back strongly and restored parity with a 83rd min goal from Ali Abondo’s free kick that went through Opiyo’s hands to bring more raptures from Gor Mahia fans.
The only notable chance for Thika United came in the 60th minute when Kennedy Otieno blasted wide a good volley after outpacing the entire Gor defence including Keeper Bonface Oluoch with the entire technical bench raising their hands in disapproval.
Gor will blame themselves for failing to wrap up the game with Meddie Kagere’s goal in the 72nd minute being disallowed for offside.
Earlier in the 56th minute,Thika goal survived a narrow scare when Michael Olunga stormed inside the dreaded box and when scoring appeared the next step,Thika defender Collins Okumu came from the
blues to thwart his effort.
