Gor Mahia drubbed AFC Leopards 3-0 in the much awaited Kenyan Premier League clash at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday.
The biggest rivalry in Kenya’s club football also referred to as “Mashemeji derby” failed to live up to the hype as Gor ran over their hapless in-laws, who offered little resistance.
Two first half goals from Rwandan Meddie Kagere and George “Blackberry” Odhiambo and second half’s Timothy Otieno header sealed the bragging rights.
Timothy set up Kagere for his third goal of the season in the 18th minute from sheer hard work – powering past a crowded defense before releasing Kagere poke home from close range to send Nyayo into a frenzy.
Black Berry doubled the lead with a lovely chip over advancing Ingwe keeper Ian Otieno in the 36th minute.
The second half saw rattled Leopards surge forward to at least pull one back and save face, however, they were unwelcome in front of Gor’s disciplined back row.
Ghanaian import Gilbert Fiamenyo, who was largely dwarfed by Gor’s solid defense, had a couple of realistic chances in front of goal but was wasteful.
With desperation sinking in and the clock ticking fast, the coach Ze Maria’s side capitalized with Timothy heading home Godfrey Walusimbi’s initial effort which bounced off the woodwork.
The meet was the 81st between the oldest and most decorated clubs in Kenya.
The three points takes Gor to second in the KPL log with 19 points – three off leaders Posta Rangers.
Leopards drop to 8th with fourteen points.
