Uganda 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier fixture against Cape Verde been postponed until Sunday, with Cranes arriving late in Praia.
“The Total 2019 AFCON Qualifier between Cape Verde and Uganda Cranes that was due today has been postponed to Sunday 11th June, 2017. Time will be communicated,” read a statement released by the FUFA.
The decision follows lengthy discussions between FUFA,Cape Verde and CAF after the Cranes failed to arrive in Priar as expected on Saturday morning for the 16:30 fixture.
“This is not ideal for the Cranes but we agreed to the postponement in the spirit of football and out of respect for the fans who bought their tickets and travelled for this fixture,” says Cape Verde federation official.
Tickets that have been purchased can be used on Sunday and those who cannot attend the match can collect a refund at the federations offices on Monday. The match will not be televised.
Five hours to the match Uganda Cranes players were yet to depart from Dakar’s Airport to Cape Verde for the crucial group opening match.
Uganda Cranes contingent was to travel this morning but the federation did not manage to get a flight few hours before the game.
FUFA communications department yesterday indicated only seven players who had arrived while the rest were wait for another flight later on Saturday morning.
The seven who arrived earlier in Cape Verde include Emmanuel Okwi, Geoffrey Serunkuma, Bernard Muwanga, Robert Kakeeto, Isaac Muleme, Derrick Nsibambi and Muhammad Shaban.
The match was to be played at the Estádio da Várzea, Praia City from around 8.30 pm Ugandan time (4.30pm in Cape Verde).
