Tanzania’s Ubungo Municipality administration outraged community yesterday after it renamed a street in honour of Tottenham and Kenya midfielder Victor Wanyama,Soka25east can reveal.
The council has now been forced to rethink the decision after apheated criticism of the move,some from local politicians.
The 25-year-old attended a local tournament in Ubungo and had the road leading to the Kinesi Stadium christened in his honour, a move that again has seen the sign post removed by the council saying laid down legal procedures were not followed.
Wanyama has been on holiday in the African state that neighbours his country Kenya where he is regarded as the most influential sportsman in the country history.
Previously the council had informed the player through a letter from the mayor about their plans of naming Ubungo Road after him with Wanyama accepting the decision.
Wanyama enjoyed a highly successful first season with Tottenham after making an £11 million move from Southampton last summer. He played 47 times in all competitions for Mauricio Pochettino’s side and featured in all but two games as Spurs finished runners-up behind Chelsea in the Premier League.
