Benin defender Gaston Houngbedji was elated with their 8-7 win aganist Togo on Sunday.
Benin progressed to the third round of Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers after a 1-1 draw aggregate that made the match to be determined through penalties.
The defender said that the victory was a good thing to the team after a nervous penalties test.
“We are happy to have won this match after the penalty shootout.We thank God for helping us win,”said Gaston.
Gaston missed his shot and he appeared dissapointed but his captain Mama Seibou stepped up to encourage him.
“After missing my shot, I was confident. I knew that despite that the qualification was coming. That’s what the captain was trying to make me understand. He cheered me up and told me that the session was not over, “he told Benin Football.
Benin now will be battling it out against Nigeria to secure a place in next year’s African Nations Championships in Kenya.
The first leg of their qualifying fixture against Super Eagles will be in Cotonou on 13th August.
