Two people have died, while around ten more were injured, following a stampede at a football match in South Africa.
The tragic incident was caused as more fans attempted to find their way into an already packed house at the FNB Stadium in the country’s capital of Johannesburg for the Carling Black Label Champion Cup match between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.
According to eNCA, Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba says that the police are investigating the cause of the stampede.
The city’s Emergency Management Services, the Johannesburg Metro Police Department and the Disaster Management Unit were at the stadium.
“This sad loss of life at such a highly anticipated event is indeed a tragedy and the city will work with all the relevant authorities to prevent tragedies such as this in future.”
Chiefs and Pirates are South Africa’s best-supported clubs and have a rivalry stretching back almost 50 years.
