Equatorial Guinea have become the first team to reach 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN) finals after their opponents Gabon withdrew.
A statement posted by Equatorial Guinea Fotball Federation (FEGUIFUT) on their official portal acknowledges the new development.
“Confederation of African Football (CAF) Director of Competitions,Emad Shenouda has sent a letter to us stating that Nzalang have earned qualification following a suprise withdrawal of Gabon,”it reads.
Both teams were to meet yesterday in Malabo but the match was called off on Wednesday.
CHAN is a competition reserved for African national teams with players exclusively composed from local leagues.
Equatorial Guinea join hosts Kenya and a further 14 qualifiers in the 16-team field, with the tournament set to be held from January 11 to February 2 next year.
