Cape Verde have crashed out of the 2017 WAFU Cup of Nations after being thumped by Squirrels of Benin at Cape Coast Stadium.
Ibrahima Ogoulola opened the scoring in the 63rd minute to put Benin in front before another cool finish from Osseni Agnide in the 89th minute ended the game as a contest.
Benin controlled everything as they attacked from all angles like angry vipers. Cape Verde only created less than four chances throughout the entire 90 minutes of play. Gomes was at fault for both goals as he conceded silly goals at the near post.
Nevertheless, the islanders were below par as Morais and Semedo Jnr failed to control the midfield, allowing the Benin to come hard on their defence.
Benin were in control of possession and could have got their lead through Fassinou but his shot went wide.
At the other end, Vaz da Costa failed to connect well from a Conceico cross allowing the Benin to recover and clear the danger away.
In the second half, it was the same old story of losing concentration in the early minutes.Eclides Ramos was cleanly beaten by a Benin winger who released Ogoulola to the right flank of the field and he made no mistake but to slot past Gomes at the near post, 1-0.
This goal forced the Cape Verde to introduce Dos Santos ,Lopes and Verala for Vaz da Costa,Pina and Verala respectively.Pina had his long range effort well saved by the Benin shot stopper who shortly made another save to deny Monteiro from scoring.
Glodjoin was forced to make a stunning save for a corner after an exchange of passes by the Cape Verde’ players in midfield resulted in an atttempt at goal.
Agnide Osseni wrapped-up matters on the night with Benin’s second goal in the dying seconds of the match after concluding a well-worked passing move with a clinical finish, 2-0.
