Football Kenya Federation will appeal the High Court ruling ordering the ongoing Kenyan Premier League to revert back to 16 teams from the current 18.

Justice John Mutivo affirmed former FKF president Sam Nyamweya’s petition which sought to have an MOU he signed with the KPL while in office restricting the number of teams in the top tier league to 16 till 2022 honored.

He also quashed the CAF Club Licensing regulations as there were no proper consultations with the stakeholders.

The orders annul the 2017 KPL season and the winner will not be able to participate in the 2018 CAF Champions League.

In a presser, Robert Muthomi, the FKF CEO has indicated they will be appealing the orders.

He also noted that they will be seeking further guidance from the world’s football governing body FIFA.

“We wish to clarify that we will be tendering our appeal at the Court of Appeal in due course in an effort aimed at protecting the sanctity of the sport,”

“We shall also be providing an update to FIFA on the judicial development locally as we further seek to tap on their technical capacity in our forth coming Appeal Suit,” Muthoni said in the statement.

FKF at the beginning of the year successfully managed to expand the KPL from 16 to 18 against the wishes of the league’s management body.

The move fueled the exit of the pan African pay television giants Supersport from the local scene as they unsuccessfully voiced the opposition to the expansion.
