Ghana Black Stars’ skipper Asamoah Gyan has come out openly to support George Opong Weah’s candidacy in today’s Liberia presidential election run-off.
The Kayseri Spor Kulubu striker has described the former African, European and World footballer of the year as a “humanitarian, great leader in all aspects of life and above all a visionary.”
Weah emerged winner in the first round October with 39.0% of the vote with his closest challenger and today’s opponent Joseph Boakai taking 29.1%.
The former PSG and AC Milan player was named African, European and World Best Footballer in 1995 a feat no other African player has equaled.
Gyan, who is the all-time Black Stars top scorer with 51 goals believes the achievements set Weah apart from the rest and shows his love for his country Liberia.
“You are not someone who just wants to occupy a position because you have exhibited your passion for your country through football.
“You didn’t win World Best Footballer on a platter of gold, you really worked hard for it and I know your motivation was from the love of your country Liberia,” Gyan said in a statement.
It will be the second time Weah, who has been a Senator, will be going for the top seat after losing to the first woman president in Africa Ellen Johnson Sirleaf previously.
Gyan already sees him as president and has promised to “come on the ground” to “help” him.
“I see you already as the president so just hope and pray because it will surely come to pass in few days to come.”
