Former Rwanda international Olivier Karekezi has resigned as the head coach of Rayon Sport.

Karekezi, who was appointed by 2017  Rwanda Premier League champions on July last year is said to have returned to Sweden hours after losing 1-0 to arch-rivals APR last Sunday.

According to the country’s portal Ruhagoyacu, Karekezi left the country without informing the club.

“We need official communication from Karekezi. In the meantime, assistant coach Jeannot Witakenge will be in charge of the team,” the club secretary general Bernard Itangishaka was quoted by the portal.

The secretary general also added that they had not lost patience with Karekezi as it was alleged by some of club supporters after their latest league loss to the army side.

“It is not true, we were happy with him because his performance was not bad. We have not talked to him yet, but if he returns we can sit with him and see what to do next. We play well, but the scoring is a big problem, it was too early to judge him because we are still in contention in every competition,” Itangishaka added.

However, a source close to the tactician has informed us that he handed a resignation letter and gave a lot of reasons that prompted his resignation including latest saga involving match fixing claims.

Karekezi is not new to controversies with his latest case being on November 17, 2017 where he was held for unspecified cyber-crimes, a day after the death of his assistant coach Hamad ‘Kataudi’ Ndikumana.

That time, due to the ongoing investigations, Rayon Sports had given Karekezi up to seven days to resume duty, failure to which would have made the team considering other options.

In the meantime the Blues have confirmed that assiatant coach Jeannot Witakenge and goalkeeping coach Ramadhan Nkunzingoma will be in charge of the defending champions who are fourth place, five points behind the leaders.
