A second half penalty converted by Chelsea’s sensation, Victor Moses was all that the Super Eagles needed to beat Whites and Reds.
Poland were out of the gate quickly but couldn’t quite get their timing right as twice in the opening minutes with Robert Lewandowski proving to be a thorn to Super Eagles defence.
Nigeria’s first great allowed chance came in the 18th minute when Alex Iwobi’s speculative shot from distance took a massive deflection off a Poland defender.
The sudden change of direction by the ball froze Fabianski who watched helplessly as the ball went over his head and hit off the top of the crossbar.
Nigeria played extremely well the rest of the first half and while they only had one dangerous chance a near miss on a header in stoppage time by Odion Ighalo their quick passing combined with Poland’s apparent disinterest kept the match scoreless.
The Super Eagles came close again early the in the second half when Brian Idowu got behind the defense but missed badly on his open chance against Fabianski. All the pressure and willingness to challenge Poland rather than sit back.
In a brilliant run into the 18-yard box, Victor Moses was hacked down by a polish player, as the referee pointed to the penalty spot.
The Eagles winger was very confident of himself as he casually kicked the ball to the left side, while the Polish keeper, Fabianski went the other way.
There were some nervy moments at the back for the home side, with goalkeeper Francis Ozoho having to make a number of fine saves, but they hung on at the end for a famous win.
