Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr has said that the Super Eagles were “lucky” to edge Poland 1-0 in a World Cup friendly last night at Municipal Stadium, Wroclaw.
He added that the Polish were “very solid” and created big opportunities to score and were dangerous from set pieces.
Chelsea winger Victor Moses netted the lone goal for the West African giants from the spot in the 61st minute after being tagged in the forbidden area.
“We were lucky to have won this game against a very solid Polish side. They created some big opportunities to score and were dangerous from set pieces that we found difficult to cope with, but I praise my team for their victory,” the German offered after the game that attracted 41,000 spectators.
He dispelled the World Cup favorites tag urging his side the stay focused and humble.
“This team is young but also a team of leaders. If we stay humble and continue to work hard to improve our play we have huge potentials, but beating two FIFA top ten teams in friendlies doesn’t mean we are now World Cup favorites.”
The Super Eagles next face Serbia in another warm-up in London on Tuesday.
Serbia lost 2-1 to Morocco in Torino, Italy in another build-up of the evening with goals from Hakim Ziyech and Khalid Boutaib. The Serbs scored through Dusan Tadic.
In other friendlies involving the Africa’s World Cup hopefuls, Tunisia edged Iran 1-0, Senegal drew 1-1 against Uzbekistan while Egypt lost 2-1 to European champions Portugal.
