The Guinea-Bissau winger Toni Silva has joined Mamelodi Sundowns on a three-year deal, subject to international clearance.
The 24-year-old was out of contract at Levadiakos and he will now join the Premier Soccer League champions who are set not to renew contract of Zimbabwean forward Khama Billiat which ends in June.
“He played for Benfica youth‚ played for Liverpool youth‚ he played for Chelsea youth‚” Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane said on Wednesday as quoted by Sowetan Live.
“He had a good youth programme. He was playing with [Manchester City midfielder] Raheem Sterling but he has never reached his full potential.”
Silva has often been linked with a transfer to the Premier Soccer League in the past and was reported by Radio Bissau on February saying that he had spoken to his international colleagues about making the move.
“I’ve spoken a lot to players from West Africa who have played in the South African League,” Silva said. “They heard knew i was going to make the move but they didn’t know where. I took my time to make a decision.”
Born in Guinea-Bissau, Silva moved with his parents to Portugal and played for Navigators under-17 and U-18 squads.
He later switched his nationally to Guinea-Bissau and made debut in a 3-2 victory over Zambia in a 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in 2016.
