World football governing body Fifa has ordered Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) to pay former Amavubi coach John McKinstry US$180,000 (Rwf5.8 million) for his unlawful dismissal.
According to a confirmation by the Rwandese football president Brig. Gen (rtd) Jean-Damascène Sekamana as reported by the Central African country’s leading daily,The New Times, his office “has received a letter” asking them to pay the Northern Irish coach.
“It looks like we have lost the case but we need to appeal the decision (to a FIFA appeals organ),” Sekamana said Friday.
McKinstry was sacked on August 2016 after a series of poor results, failing to guide the team to the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations which was hosted in Gabon.
However, under his tutorage Rwanda’s home based professionals made to the quarterfinals of CHAN 2016 on home soil, and a runner up finish in the CECAFA Senior Challenge the previous year in Ethiopia.
If the federation fails to pay the staggering amount then Rwanda will be banned from all FIFA-sanctioned activities as per the football governing body rules.
