The second edition of the SportPesa Super Cup was today launched and will take place from 3rd to 10th June 2018 at the newly refurbished Kasarani Stadium, Nairobi.
Eight teams will take part, they are Gor Mahia, AFC Leopards, Kakamega Homeboyz, Kariobangi Sharks (Kenya), Yanga, Simba, Singida United (Tanzania) and Jeshi La Kujenga Nchi (Zanzibar).
Apart from Jeshi La Kujenga Nchi, Homeboyz and Sharks, the rest of the participants are sponsored by betting giants Sportpesa.
The winner will pocket $30,000 as prize money and grab a ticket to play Premier League side Everton FC in a high profile friendly at Goodison Park, UK.
Kenyan giants Gor Mahia are the defending champions. K’Ogalo beat arch rivals AFC Leopards 3-0 to win the inaugural edition in Dar es Salaam, Tanzainia last year.
Gor went ahead to face Everton in a friendly which they narrowly lost 2-1 to the Toffies in the Tanzanian capital.
“We are looking forward to play in the SportPesa Super Cup and we are ready to defend the title,” Gor’s President Ambrose Rachier said.
Herbert Mwachiro, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) CEO praised Sportpesa’s continued role in supporting the game.
“SportPesa has done and continues to play a developmental partnership role that deserves commendation and emulation by both local and international bodies.”
Gor played English Championship outfit Hull City last Sunday at Kasarani in another high profile warm-up made possible by Sportpesa.
The match ended in a barren draw after normal time with Hull edging Gor 4-3 on post-match penalty.
Yanga and Gor, who are pooled together in the 2018 CAF Confederation Cup are likely to face each other in the Super Cup before their Group D Match Day 3 tie in Nairobi on 18th July.
