African football stakeholders that include coaches and technical officials are in Rabat,Morocco for a two day conference to conduct serious soul-searching after disastrous 2018 FIFA World Cup that saw none of the five representatives qualify for the second round of matches for the first time since 1982.
CAF President Ahmad Ahmad officials opened the sessions that will seek to get clarity of what actually happened and remedies to ensure improved performances after Senegal,Egypt,Tunisia,Morocco and Egypt were all eliminated in the first round.
Coaches and officials of the five countries are in Rabat to genuinely w discuss the disappointing results at a debrief in Rabat organised by the Confederation of African Football and the Moroccan Football Federation on Sunday and Monday.
The poor results in Morocco elicited alot of hue and cry from stakeholders sort to know the cause of the poor results and yet this was the first time CAF had managed to fund all the team with a $500,000 to help in preparations while further requesting FIFA for $2 million dollars advance for each of the five representatives.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino said last week that Africa’s failure to get a team past the first round had been discussed by the game’s top officials and was a concern.
“You need a little luck to get past the first round at a tournament like the World Cup. Senegal, Morocco and Nigeria all played very good football. But this is a concern and we have been talking about it with the president of CAF and we will intervene,” he told reporters in Moscow.
“To have success on the pitch, you have to do well off it and it is essential to work with the African federations to ensure everything is doing well with their organisation.”
African teams have never qualified for the FIFA World Cup semi-finals since the inception of the tournament.
