Shauri Moyo Sportiff dimmed Shauri Moyo Blue Stars 2-1 in a thrilling Super 8 Premier League second leg tie on Saturday 4 July at City Stadium, Nairobi.
Joy outweighed heartache as the pre-match underdogs claimed the bragging rights in the highly physical Kamukunji derby in front of a capacity crowd at the venue.
Burly forward Freddy Eninga scored a stunner of a goal and set up another to inspire Sportiff keep their 8th place position with an improved 24 points on the 16-team column after 19 rounds of matches.
Speaking after the match a delighted Sportiff coach Collins Omondi congratulated his players for the win.
He attributed the Derby success to good preparation and the player’s willingness to prove their worth against the traditional rivals.
He said: “We had prepared well all week for this derby and the players were confident saying they will take care of things on the pitch and that’s what they’ve done.”
The defeat, extends Blue Stars winless streak to ten matches and in the process dropping three places below to 11th on points.
Blue Stars coach Hamisi Ali was visibly exasperated after the outcome admitting they lacked the cutting edge upfront but vowed to come back stronger.
“It was good game players did their part but what we are lacking is the striking. The defence and midfield was okay however getting the goals was a challenge and that is what we will be working on moving forward. “Ali remarked.
The match started on a slow pace with both side playing with caution but the hosts settled first and drew first blood. Eninga whipped in an inviting free kick from the right edge of the opponents box and Abdi Hassan rose highest to bullet in the opener on the 16th minute, drawing cheers from a section of the fans.
Second half begun robustly with the visitors desperate for an equalizer. However their defence was caught flatfooted on the 53rd minute by man of the match Eninga who claimed a goal of his own; shrugging off his marker to unleash a ferocious shot that was too hot to handle for Blue Stars keeper Harrison Kafue.
Idris Gerrard scored the consolation goal for Blue Stars at injury time after connecting to a well-floated pass from the left flank and made no mistakes from near post.
At Makongeni grounds, Makadara Junior League SA picked a routine 2-1 win over hosts MASA to return to the top of the log on 40 points, three ahead of second place Jericho whose game against TUK was rescheduled.
Second half strikes from speedy winger Ericsson Kamweru (76′) and Benson Nyongesa (92) silenced the home fans as the defeat sees MASA stagnate at 10th on 20 points.
Surprise of the weekend saw stuttering former holders Kayole Asubuhi defeat reigning champions Kawangware United 2-1 at Riruta BP grounds.
Joel Gedi scored a brace (49′ & 76′) as Asubuhi chalked their 5th win in 19 games but did did not ease their relegation concerns as they are still rooted at the bottom on 15 points.
United who scored through Duncan Kayoti on the 62 minute remain 3rd on 36 points.
