Barclays Bank has unveiled a three million kwacha package for the inaugural 2019 ABSA Cup.
During the launch of the ABSA Cup at InterContinental Hotel, Barclays Bank Managing Director Mizinga Melu disclosed that the winners for this year’s edition will walk away with a K500, 000 prize.
“So this year the teams will only play two matches and we have ensured that despite the teams only playing two matches the money is bigger and better,” Melu said.
“If you remember last year it was K400,000 and we thought that, wow this is big, but this the winner goes away K500,000 the runners up prize goes away with K250,000.”
Melu said that the coach of the tournament would pocket K18, 000 with the player of the tournament getting the same amount.
Man of the match prizes will attract a K8, 000 prize.
She adds that the bank would also conduct financial literacy workshops for participating teams in Lusaka and the Copperbelt.
And FAZ president Andrew Kamanga hailed Barclays Bank for their continued support towards football.
Kamanga said that transition from Barclays to ABSA Cup had excitingly come at a time FAZ was also undergoing a transition into the CAF/FIFA aligned calendar.
During the transition season, the ABSA Cup format will have four Super League team comprising the top two in each stream.
Winners of Stream A will play runners up in Stream B while toppers in the other group will take on the second placed team in the other stream.
So far only Stream B winners Green Eagles have qualified with the runner up set to be decided on the final day on Sunday while Stream A winners and runners up are yet to be decided.
The semi-final will be played on June 15 at a yet to be named venue.
