Defender Kenneth Omeruo scored a 73rd minute header to give Nigeria a 1-0 win against Guinea in Alexandria and seal a place in the last 16 of the 2019 Total Africa Cup of Nations.
Gernot Rohr’s charges started the game on a slow note with Odion Ighalo, Ahmed Musa all making the starting line up while John Obi Mikel was on the bench. Midfielder Naby Keita started in midfield for Guinea after missing the first game against Madagascar.
It was Guinea who had the better of play in the first 45 minutes with Sory Kaba leading the attacks.
But it was the Nigerians with another late goal in the 73rd minute, Omeruo met Simon Moses’ corner with a well placed header rising above the Guinea defense.
Lack of concentration from Paul Put’s men in the closing stages as none was able to pick up the big tall center back in the box.
The quality of Nigeria coming through and six points ensure Nigeria’s spot in the last 16.
