CAS throws back Esperance/Wydad impasse to CAF

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has released it’s verdict regarding the troubled CAF Champions League  final between Esperance de Tunis and Wydad Casablanca.

Esperance were crowned CAF Champions League  winners after Wydad Casablanca  abandoned the game following VAR controversy.

The game was halted for over an hour as the Moroccans refused to continue the game unless the VAR was checked, saying that no one informed them before the game that VAR will not be used.

CAFs Executive Committee had announced that the second leg of the African final should be replayed between both teams but in a neutral ground, the decision which was appealed by the two clubs in CAS.

CAS stated that the appeals of Esperance and Wydad have been upheld and that it “decided to annul the decision challenged”.

The court conveyed that CAF authorities shall review the incidents which occurred in the Radès stadium on 31 May 2019, to order the appropriate disciplinary sanctions whether it’s to replay the game or award the title to one of the two teams.
