Gambia suprised both friends and foes as they produced a virtuoso perfomance in their famous 3-1 win over Angola in their opening 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifier at Estádio 11 de Novembro in Luanda on Wednesday evening.
The Scorpions lost to the very same opponents on aggregate in 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers just a few months ago, but got their revenge with a come from behind victory in the Angolan capital.
Wilson Eduardo fired the hosts in front after just three minutes with early signs pointing towards another defeat for the visitors.
Gambia, though, hit back with two goals from Assan Ceesay in two minutes as they held a narrow lead at the half-time break.
Angola improved following the interval, but Gambia’s defensive line held firm before Sulayman Marreh put the icing on the cake with a 89th minute strike to hand the visitors a memorable victory.
Gambia next face DR Congo in a Group D clash in Bakau on Monday, while Angola travel to Gabon to face the Panthers this weekend.
