Maritzburg United will face Mamelodi Sundowns in the 2019 Telkom Knockout final following a 2-1 win over Kaizer Chiefs at Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit on Sunday afternoon.
The Team of Choice booked their place in a first TKO final thanks to a brace from Judas Moseamedi in what was a thrilling semi-final encounter in the Mpumalanga province.
Maritzburg dominated all the early exchanges with Bruce Bvuma called into action on several occasions before Moseamedi struck home the opener on the half-hour mark, albeit through rather fortunate circumstances.
The forward ran onto Daniel Cardoso’s miscued back pass before rounding Bvuma and passing the ball into an open net to give the KwaZulu-Natal side a deserved lead at the break.
Chiefs enjoyed a brief moment of dominance following the break before Maritzburg took control of the game and the visitors should’ve put the match beyond any reasonable doubt before the hour mark.
Daylon Claasen was unlucky to see his shot canon off the woodwork while Moseamedi was guilty of missing a catalogue of chances before Chiefs levelled matters in the 78th minute.
Yagan Sasman well positioned to guide home the rebound after Richard Ofori kept Samir Nurkovic’s diving headers from finding the back of the net.
Maritzburg, though, would regain the lead six minutes later as Moseamedi volleyed home Bandile Shandu’s cross to complete his double and send Maritzburg into their first TKO final.
