Its D-DAY for Malawi football as they go for the much anticipated Football Association of Malawi(FAM) elections that will decide wether to retain FAM President Walter Nyamilandu who is seeking a 5th Term as he battles with his deputy James Mwenda who has vowed to beat his boss in the ding dong battle.
Nyamilandu who changed from his earlier decision to bow out at the end of his 15-year reign seems to have a headstart in the elections with FAM nine affiliates said to be firmly behind his leadership and giving him full support.
On the other hand James Mwenda has been praised for getting the courage to be in the race in what he has termed as his only way to upgrade Malawi football and embrace new football development ideas.
The number of electorates to Football Association of Malawi (Fam) elective annual general meeting (AGM) being 36 in number could be among the lowest in Southern Africa and some quarters are calling for an increase of the same to avoid voter manipulation.
36 voting delegates will decide the winners for Fam Executive Committee elections scheduled for today December 14 in Mangochi District.
8 delegates will be from the Super League of Malawi,6 each from Southern,Northern and Central football Associations,2 from women football, junior football, beach football and national coaches Association.
Other Candidates in the race for other positions include Jabbar Alide and Daudi Mtanthiko who are both gunning for the first vice-presidency.
Othaniel Hara (incumbent second vice president) and Lameck Khonje are jostling for second vice-presidency. Nyasulu, Felister Dossi, Chimango Munthali, Muhammad Selemani, Davis Sado, Christopher Kuyera and Rashid Ntelela will race for board membership.
The elections will be observed by FIFA representative Solomon Mudege.
