Ex-Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah admits taking risks during Black Stars tenure

Former Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah has revealed that he never regrets making gambles with his squad selection when he was in charge of the Black Stars.

Appiah told Light FM that he was never afraid of taking bold decisions while at the helm of the National Team.

Appiah’s first tenure with Ghana was between 2012 and 2014 and led the team to a dismal showing at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

He then returned in 2017 and was in charge of another poor run at the 2019 Total Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

But the 59-year-old Appiah believes he made the right decisions while he was Ghana coach.

“One thing that I know is that if you are fearful in taking decisions, accepting criticisms and facing sack on the Black Stars job, you are not going to be successful,” Appiah said.

“For instance, if you fear bringing in new good players to replace the old players, you are not going to do the country good.

“Even in our last game against South Africa, I included eight debutants and I was [asked] ‘do you know your job is at stake?’

“But I took the risk that if we got eliminated, the country would benefit from the new talent introduced in the future.”

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) decided against extending Appiah’s contract when in was due for renewal in December 2019 and replaced him with former Black Stars and Wolfsburg captain Charles Akonnor.
