The Confederation of African Football (CAF) Executive committee will hold a virtual meeting on June 30 to discuss amongst other issues, the creation of the Women’s Champion League, and the status of this year’s Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON).

This is a move that’s aligned with CAF’s recently released strategy which consisted of five pillars. Among them is competitions whose implementation involved introducing new continental club competition to strengthen domestic leagues and clubs.

The CAF women’s champions league is a tournament that players and coaches alike have been calling for as a way of boosting competition levels within clubs and players. As things stand, female footballers have only the women’s domestic leagues and possibly a league cup to play. This they argue, as much as it keeps them on the pitch, doesn’t give them the avenue to test themselves against foreign competitors.

As for AWCON, the African governing body will deliberate whether the tournament will go ahead as scheduled from November to December or postponed as a result of the complications presented by the coronavirus pandemic.

No host has been named since Congo-Brazaville withdrew. However, Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea have expressed interest in taking over. Thus, the meeting might resolve this issue.
